Mercedes introduce 2019 CLS450 with all-new electrified inline-six

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the all-new 2019 CLS line-up. The CLS450, equipped with a new inline six-cylinder engine and 48V technology, is the first vehicle in the company’s line-up to feature electrified tech as the German OEM hints at a move toward electrification.

Restyled and fitted with a completely new 3-liter unit, the most powerful of the third-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS line-up boasts 367ps at 5,500-6100rpm and 369 lb-ft, featuring a systematically electrified engine with EQ Boost (integrated starter/generator) and a 48V onboard electrical system, propelling the car to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds.

Thanks to EQ Boost, a further 21ps and 184 lb-ft of torque is available, with the integrated electric motor assisting the combustion engine when accelerating, as well as making driving without the combustion engine possible and supplying the battery with power by means of high-efficiency recuperation. This means improved fuel consumption, 7.5 l/100km exactly, with the OEM claiming the engine’s efficiency is at a level previously in the exclusive domain of high-voltage hybrid technology.

The CLS 350 and 400 diesel models will generate 289ps and 442 lb-ft of torque 344ps and 516 lb-ft respectively. This means the CLS350 will reach 100km/h in 5.7 seconds, while the CLS400 will do the same in five seconds flat. In terms of emissions, Mercedes states that the gasoline unit will produce 178g/km of CO2, while the diesel alternatives will generate 148g/km.

After making its debut at the 2017 Los Angeles auto show this week, the 2019 CLS will go on sale in the USA by fall next year.
