BorgWarner introduces new turbocharging system

Tier 1 supplier BorgWarner has developed an all-new two-stage R2S turbocharging system, featuring two variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbochargers.

Developed for inclusion in BMW’s 320ps diesel motor, the supplier claims its component innovation will deliver rapid acceleration as well as optimum power output.

“Combining two of our latest VTG turbochargers in our innovative R2S system delivers almost instant acceleration and increases efficiency at low engine speeds,” said Frédéric Lissalde, president at BorgWarner Turbo Systems.

“Our collaboration with the BMW Group has resulted in a more powerful, efficient engine that is more economical, environmentally friendly and dynamic.”

The R2S technology features two electrically actuated VTG turbochargers arranged in series. When at low engine speeds a small high-pressure turbocharger provides most of the boost, but as speed increases a larger low-pressure turbocharger takes over.

It is thanks to the utilization of a VTG turbocharger for the low-pressure stage, that enables enhanced transient engine behavior for improved acceleration while minimizing turbo lag and emissions.

With OEMs pushing to improve the industry’s emissions and efficiency, the German supplier’s component facilitates the need for rapid acceleration, while significantly reducing fuel consumption.
