Audi and E.On to install photovoltaic roof system at Győr engine plant

Audi, in collaboration with E.On, has revealed plans to install a solar energy park on the roofs of its engine plant in Győr, Hungary. The photovoltaic system, which will be fitted to the roof of the logistics centers, will cover about 160,000m² (1,700,000ft²).

The development at the Audi Hungaria plant in Győr will create Europe’s largest photovoltaic system installed on a building. Peak output is expected to reach 12MW. Construction work will begin in August 2019 and energy generation will commence in 2020.

“We are committed to the economical use of resources and therefore want to keep the environmental impact of our production as low as possible,” explained Achim Heinfling, chairman of the board at Audi Hungaria.

“Approximately 70% of Audi Hungaria’s heat requirements are already covered by climate-neutral, geothermal energy. Our goal is to have completely CO₂-neutral plant operation in the future. With the construction of the solar-cell park, we are now taking a further step to achieve this in terms of power supply,” he added.

As part of the agreement, E.On will put the park – which consists of 35,000 solar cells – into operation and will operate it, with an annual output of more than 9.5GWh. This corresponds to the annual energy requirements of 5,000 households.
