You may remember the third-generation Tucson better as the Hyundai ix35, but the new car takes on the Arizonan name worldwide when it goes on sale in September.
What engines are available?
Two versions of the 1.6-liter petrol (136ps; 177ps) are on offer. A 2-liter petrol motor will be available in the USA. For diesel markets, there’s a 1.7-liter (116ps) and a 2-liter powerplant (136ps; 185ps) available.
The 177ps petrol is a new turbocharged unit that delivers 265Nm of torque from 1,500-4,500rpm. The turbocharger features low-inertia turbo-spooling response characteristics and an electronic wastegate control for more precise control of manifold pressure. Internally, piston-cooling oil jets ensure cooler piston temperatures for enhanced engine life. It also features a new water jacket insert that prioritizes cooling in the upper level of the cylinder block where more combustion heat is generated, resulting in lower cylinder head temperatures and allowing for leaner air/fuel mixtures for better fuel efficiency.
What about the low-emissions stuff?
There’s stop/start available, but we want something a bit more exciting than that. A 48V mild hybrid and a plug-in concept were shown in Geneva earlier this year, but they’re not around just yet. Hyundai is leasing a fuel cell version of the last-generation car to selected partners, so we can expect an updated hydrogen model soon.
