Mercedes-Benz unveils its revamped G-Class


The all-new G-Class makes its public debut at the Detroit auto show in the USA this month in G550 form. Completely redeveloped and fitted with a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo gasoline engine offering 427ps and 450 lb-ft of torque at 2,000rpm to 4,750rpm, despite near-identical looks to its predecessor plenty has changed for the Mercedes-Benz SUV.

Developed by the powertrain team behind the 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine for super duty trucks, the all-new 3.0-liter V6 Power Stroke unit promises 250ps, 440 lb-ft of torque, and an anticipated 5175kg of towing capacity.

Horiba unveils new IC engine development tool

Horiba has unveiled its latest IC engine development tool MEDAS (Mobile Efficient Dynamic Altitude Simulator), a completely innovative altitude simulator for optimizing performance and emission optimization in engine development intended for portable use. In this way, the Japanese company expands its range in the field of real driving emissions (RDE).


MEDAS can simulate altitudes of up to 6,000 meters and map real driving situations with maximum precision – without the need for costly, time-consuming tests at different locations or even for complex altitude chambers. The innovative system was developed in cooperation with the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Universitat Politècnica de València, UPV) and offers a solution for a wide bandwidth of differently sized internal combustion engines. It allows the global comparison of test results across different altitudes above sea level as well as the simulation of altitude-dependent route profiles as required by emission legislature.


“The mapping of real driving situations in the laboratory is gaining in importance for manufacturers worldwide,” says Stefan Bender, General Manager Automotive Test Systems, HORIBA Europe GmbH. “However, systems available on the market up to now are too large and are neither flexible nor sufficiently precise or dynamic. Also, they consume too much energy. With MEDAS, we offer our customers an innovative portable solution which ensures that an internal combustion engine can be optimized promptly and reliably to meet the current certification standards.”
