Mercedes-Benz unveils its revamped G-Class

The all-new G-Class makes its public debut at the Detroit auto show in G550 form. Completely redeveloped and fitted with a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo gasoline engine offering 427ps and 450 lb-ft of torque at 2,000rpm to 4,750rpm, despite near-identical looks to its predecessor plenty has changed for the Mercedes-Benz SUV.


Ford’s F150 pickup gets its first diesel motor

Developed by the powertrain team behind the 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine for super duty trucks, the all-new 3.0-liter V6 Power Stroke unit promises 250ps, 440 lb-ft of torque, and an anticipated 5175kg of towing capacity.

SHOW NEWS: Micro Hybrid Systems for heavy-duty applications

Typifying the diversity at the 2016 Engine Expo, exhibitor AVID is displaying its eFan Micro Hybrid System (MHS). The MHS replaces a conventional engine cooling system, reducing parasitic loads on the engine and allowing operating temperatures to be optimised, ultimately reducing fuel consumption.

AVID has worked closely with EMP in North America since the inception of the technology and has pioneered its development outside of the USA. There are currently over 15,000 examples of the system installed on vehicles around the world delivering fuel savings of up to 15%; AVID is keen to highlight that there has been a corresponding reduction in greenhouse gas and toxic exhaust emissions.

The system also addresses some of the major operational issues associated with operating heavy vehicles such as buses and earth moving machinery such as breakdowns due to overheating, excessive time spent on cooling system maintenance, vehicle fires are caused and accelerated by leaking fan drive hydraulic systems and low temperature operating cycles on heavy diesel engines.

Improved engine thermal management means improved operation of exhaust aftertreatment systems. Improving real world performance of these systems by ensuring the engine reaches its optimum operating temperature more quickly and stays there, unlike the conventional systems which often result in poor temperature control and low temperature operation of the engine.
