Mercedes-Benz unveils its revamped G-Class


The all-new G-Class makes its public debut at the Detroit auto show in G550 form. Cutting-edge Euro 6 engines showcased by Renault Trucks

Renault Trucks has presented its Euro 6 compliant engines at the IAA show in Hanover. The new powertrain family makes it debut some 18 months before the tough new emissions legislation comes into force.

To comply with the new regulations, Renault Trucks has decided to use different technologies, choosing the most appropriate and efficient solutions in regards to the engine's size and future application. For its heavy-duty range, the OEM will offer a new six-cylinder 11-liter engine to be known as the DTI 11. This will be available with three power ratings: 380hp (1,800Nm), 430hp (2,050Nm) and 460hp (2,200Nm). Although its architecture has much in common with the Euro 5 engine, the latest powertrain offering breaks new ground for the OEM with its injection and depollution systems.

The DTI 11 engine is combined with an SCR post treatment system for reducing polluting emissions to comply with the Euro 6. In order to provide optimal performance, the system must operate at sufficiently high temperature levels. Engineers working for Renault Trucks have met this requirement by combining different solutions, such as exhaust gases recirculation during engine start-up phases, the use of controlled valves at the intake and the exhaust as well as specific combustion strategies.

The post treatment system is fitted with a particulate filter, as is the case with all Renault Trucks Euro 6 engines.

The same technology has also been chosen for the OEMs new six-cylinder 13-liter engine. However, this model features an electronic pump injector system, which is particularly suitable for engines with this displacement, says Renault Trucks. The DTI 13 will be available with the following power ratings: 440hp (2,200Nm), 480hp (2,400Nm) and 520hp (2,550 Nm).

For its medium duty range, Renault Trucks has developed a new four-cylinder, 5-liter engine, to be known as the DTI 5. It will be available with 210hp (800Nm) and 240hp (900Nm) versions. As for the DTI 8, this engine features six-cylinders in-line with a displacement of 8-liters. It will be available in 250hp (950Nm), 280hp (1,050Nm) and 320hp (1,200Nm) versions.

The 5-liter and 8-liter Euro 6 engines are fitted with EGR, which recycles part of the exhaust gases during combustion and reduces the amount of NOx produced by the engine. The remaining NOx is eliminated by catalysis via the SCR system. Finally, the particulate filter enables the vehicle to comply with very low levels of particle emissions demanded by the new standard. Furthermore, the engine is equipped with a common rail type of injection with a maximum pressure of 2,000 bars.
