Mercedes-Benz unveils its revamped G-Class

The all-new G-Class makes its public debut at the Detroit auto show in G550 form. Completely redeveloped and fitted with a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo gasoline engine offering 427ps and 450 lb-ft of torque at 2,000rpm to 4,750rpm, despite near-identical looks to its predecessor plenty has changed for the Mercedes-Benz SUV.

Developed by the powertrain team behind the 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine for super duty trucks, the all-new 3.0-liter V6 Power Stroke unit promises 250ps, 440 lb-ft of torque, and an anticipated 5175kg of towing capacity.

SK Innovation and Continental create battery JV

SK Innovation and Continental are to work together to develop class-leading battery technology after the two global suppliers signed an agreement to establish a JV company.

According to Chey Jae-won, executive vice chairman of SK Group, the aim is for the expertise of the two suppliers to be concentrated in the new company with the end goal of mutually developing, producing and globally marketing lithium-ion 
battery systems for cars. Jae-won added: “The cooperation of the two companies’ capabilities and technologies is a remarkable starting point to open a new horizon for future transport. The combination of SK’s battery cell know-how and Continental´s battery system know-how will yield the best solution for the operation of electric car batteries and therefore suggests the most evolved model to the global automobile market.

Dr Elmar Degenhart, 
chairman of the executive board of Continental, added: “We will make up a strong team that will work together highly-effectively in developing and manufacturing one of the technologies that is key for future mobility. In this way, we can support our global automotive customers in introducing electric drive systems with state-
of-the-art lithium-ion battery technology."

The agreement is for SK Innovation to hold a 51% stake in the new company, while Continental will have the remaining shares. The venture, which will be managed operationally from Berlin, is slated to start business in the fourth quarter of this year. Its research 
and development activities will be carried out in Daejon, South Korea,
in addition to Berlin. Production, marketing and sales will be set up locally in the target markets worldwide.
