Mercedes-Benz unveils its revamped G-Class

The all-new G-Class makes its public debut at the Detroit auto show in G550 form. Completely redeveloped and fitted with a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo gasoline engine offering 427ps and 450 lb-ft of torque at 2,000rpm to 4,750rpm, despite near-identical looks to its predecessor plenty has changed for the Mercedes-Benz SUV.

Developed by the powertrain team behind the 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine for super duty trucks, the all-new 3.0-liter V6 Power Stroke unit promises 250ps, 440 lb-ft of torque, and an anticipated 5175kg of towing capacity.

Renault announces wireless charging plans

Renault has confirmed it plans to particpate at the Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) London trial, and at the same time the French car maker also announced it is to start preliminary R&D studies focusing on the integration of Qualcomm Halo WEVC technology into some its vehicles.

The groundbreaking trial, which commences later this year, is supported by a cross section of stakeholders from government departments and agencies, to commercial and private sector enterprises. The objectives of the study are to evaluate the commercial viability of wireless EV charging and gain user feedback on the use of WEVC enabled vehicles.

“We are very excited to be working with Renault, a global leader in electric vehicles and an innovator in the growing low carbon vehicle market,” said Anthony Thomson, VP of business development at Qualcomm. “Renault’s participation in the WEVC London trial and Qualcomm’s drive to make charging of electric vehicles simple and effortless means that EV drivers will have access to technology that makes EV charging easy.”

Jacques Hebrard, VP energy and environment advanced projects director at Renault, added: “Our participation in the WEVC London trial with Qualcomm complements Renault’s European research and development project involving 10 partners to demonstrate wireless inductive charging of electric vehicles in a public environment with a high level of performance and safety.

"The deployment of wireless inductive charging requires inter-operability between cars and ground systems within common European and, hopefully, worldwide standards.”
