Honda unveils new diesel engine

Honda president and CEO, Takanobu Ito, has used the Tokyo Motor Show to surprise the media by unveiling an all-new diesel engine for the European market.

The new powertrain family, called Earth Dreams Technology, will start with a 1.6-liter offering that will make its debut in the new Civic in late 2012. Technical details about new diesel remain secret, but Honda says it is lighter than any other diesel engine in its class and with CO2 emissions below 100g/km and 120ps at 4,000rpm, the powertrain delivers a class-leading balance of fuel economy and performance. The 1,596cc EDT unit also delivers 300Nm of torque at 2,000rpm.
