Obama unveils eco-friendly production investment

Right: Obama’s administration hopes that the investment will not only further revitalize the US automotive industry

In an effort to further boost the US automotive industry, President Obama has announced that public funding to the tune of US$2.4 billion will be made available to OEMs and suppliers that are further developing clean powertrain technologies. Obama’s administration hopes that the investment will not only further revitalize the US automotive industry, but it will also accelerate the manufacturing and deployment of the next generation of US batteries and electric vehicles. “There’s no doubt that the USA wants to become a leader in these technologies,” said one analyst in New York following the announcement. The package has been welcomed automotive figures from around the world. Ricardo CEO, Dave Shemmans, added: “This Recovery Act funding of projects across 20 US States will provide a welcome stimulus to the automotive industry as well as giving a much needed and far-sighted direction that other country may wish to emulate.” A clutch of US suppliers – as well as both GM and Ford – have in the last two years invested heavily in developing next-generation, environmentally friendly powertrain technologies, with products such as the Chevrolet Volt only a year away from being launched in most global markets.
