Although it is a dominant prime mover and one of the most efficient power sources, a typical modern turbocharged Diesel engine still wastes significant amounts of fuel energy.
The Bowman TurboGen® technology recovers useful energy from the exhaust stream, converting it to electric power.
TurboGen® is essentially an exhaust turbine downstream of the turbocharger (which is re-matched to suit the new setup) directly linked to a high speed/high efficiency electrical generator. The generated power can be used to increase the engine/genset power output, or the total net power may be kept constant, but with a lower fuel input.
Recent development work has been concentrated on use of TurboGen® with other cycles, like an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) as well as using TurboGen® with engines running on renewable fuel, both liquid and gas. Field tests running renewable energy fuelled engines have proved successful and commercialisation of TurboGen® products adapted for renewable fuels is well underway.
